Program Description
The Youth Songwriters Collective is a creative, playful, and supportive space for songwriters in grades 6-12 to share their music, learn new skills, develop a fulfilling writing process, and cultivate their artistic voices in a collaborative community. Songwriting is a powerful vehicle for connection, whether we are connecting to an idea, a moment in time, a feeling, ourselves, other people, or the world around us.
There is a world of infinite possibility within and around us. When we gain access to it, it’s amazing what we can find.
Students must sing and play/have access to an instrument at home in order to enroll (even if it’s just a couple of chords)
Led by Joanna Schubert, this program will include:
WORKSHOPS We will explore a variety of topics, prompts, and musical/lyrical techniques catered to the interests of the group, with possibilities such as: the magic behind our favorite songs, cool chord progressions on our instruments, object writing, the playground of improvisation, and DIY home recording. After every workshop, members will be given a new songwriting task with the goal of bringing in a brand new song the following week. By the end of the session, each member will have written at least 3 new songs.
SONG SHARES We will take turns sharing our songs and song-seeds with one another and have the opportunity for constructive feedback.
COLLABORATIONS We will have a blast co-writing in duos or trios with other members of the collective, and possibly also play and sing on each other’s existing songs.
A FINAL SHOW Songwriters will perform the world premieres of their new songs for our friends and family!
