What It Means To Support Ensembleship

As part of Brooklyn Acting Lab community, you know how exciting that first taste of theater can be. Whether it’s the rush of performing, the bond between cast-mates, the invitation to imagine and develop your role, or the experience of laughing and crying along with the characters as an audience member, theater is a place to come together. It is a community that celebrates our uniquenesses and differences.

At Brooklyn Acting Lab, not only do we know this to be true, but we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive and nurturing environment for young actors to be themselves while honing their craft through high-quality arts education and top-notch teaching artists.

2018 has been a tremendous year of artistic and institutional growth. We celebrated our 10-year anniversary! When we launched with an enrollment of 10 kindergartners we never envisioned that we would be in a position today to serve so much of the community we love. Your ongoing support has made this possible.

This year alone, BAL has:
• offered 25 plays in 25 days with kids ages 4–9, through our PLAY in a Day series;
• organized 43 after-school programs;
• partnered with 7 local public schools;
• introduced our Tween Scene series;
• presented 4 full-scale musicals and 2 school-wide showcases at the Actors Fund Arts Center; and
• produced our first adult-ensemble show with 4 sold-out performances in March 2018

Beyond all of those amazing accomplishments, what we feel most excited about is launching the BAL Youth Ensembleship Fund. Thanks to the generous support of the BAL community, we raised $18,000 this year which went directly to scholarships and financial aid. And as we move into our 11th year, we need your help to take the Ensemebleship Fund to even greater heights. With a goal of $25,000 for our next round of fundraising, we hope to never turn away an aspiring actor from participating in our programming.

Your gift in any amount is 100% tax-deductible, and will make a huge difference in our ability to offer inclusive theater education to all within our community of Brooklyn. And as we encourage our students to do, please “pass the sound and energy” along. Share this request with friends and colleagues, and on social media, to match your gift or make a donation of their own!

Brooklyn Acting Lab is an ensemble. Without you, our ensemble would not be complete. Theater is more rewarding for all when it is diverse, inclusive and representative of our world. By giving to our Ensembleship Fund, you are part of making it all possible.

From parents of Ensembleship Fund recipients:

“I am very grateful that my kid has been able to be a part of the BAL community for over a year. The way her face lights up every time I watch her perform is priceless.

“BAL is an incredible program, however the cost (which is worth every penny) was a struggle for us last winter. When we didn’t register, BAL reached out and offered us a partial scholarship so that my daughter could continue on with her friends. It was a generous offer and an unforgettably wonderful experience for my daughter.”
