Program Description

Create theater magic this summer with Brooklyn Acting Lab!

BAL’s Young PLAYers Series run weekly from July 6 – August 14, 2020. Now available at P.S. 321 in North Park Slope, Brooklyn — with a new selection of weekly theater programs for rising Kindergarteners and 1st graders!

These fun and enriching full day programs will encourage young drama explorers to use their bodies, voices and imaginations. Each week is unique with different themes to inspire our explorations. Led by experienced theater-educators who can encourage even the most reticent young actor to join in the magic of theatrical creation. Join us and increase fun! Early drop-off and extended day are available at an additional fee.

Please send your child with a healthy lunch, two snacks, and a bottle of water. We are a nut-free zone so please pack snacks and food accordingly! If your child is participating in our aftercare program, please kindly send your child with one or two extra healthy snacks for the end of their day!

Our “sharing” is scheduled on Fridays at 2:30PM at PS 321. We love when parents and/or caregivers are able to attend the performance, however we do understand that scheduling is sometimes difficult. As long as your child knows in advance, our staff will always be present for your children as their “audience,” and will provide a lot of support!

Early Drop-off is available at 8:30 am on Monday, and 8 am Tuesday thru Friday ($50/per week). Aftercare is available from 3–6 pm Monday thru Thursday, but NOT on Friday ($120 per week).

Program Dates and Themes

July 6 – 10 | Unicorns, Wizards, Dragons & Fairies | $475
Come join us as we spend a magical week exploring the worlds of unicorns, wizards, dragons and fairies! We’ll use art materials together with our voices, bodies, and imaginations to create magical, theatrical landscapes, sing songs of adventures and travel on a mystical journey. We’ll share what we’ve discovered with our families and BAL staff at the end of the week.

July 13 – 17 | Mini Musical: A Frozen Adventure | $475
We’ll use the super fun and popular Disney musical Frozen as our jumping off point to travel to the icy northland and devise our own adventure. Incorporating lots of fun theater games and exercises, we’ll explore alternative plots, sing, dance, and create our own text and set pieces as we produce our unique frozen spectacle for families and friends on Friday afternoon.

July 20 – 24 | Clowning Around | $475
Ever really want to just be a clown? Now’s your chance! We’ll each develop a clown persona, learn what skills clowns use to make people laugh, use theater games and exercises to create a clown troupe, develop skits from our own ideas and write some silly clown jokes! Hey, it’s really ok to spend a week being silly! On Friday afternoon, our Clown Troupe will put on a clown-extravaganza for families and friends. Come join the fun!

July 27 – 31 | Mini Musical: Mary Poppins | $475
If you love Mary Poppins, (and really, who doesn’t!?) join us for an exciting week dancing on the (imaginary) rooftops of Park Slope! We’ll let this enchanting story lead us on a singing, movement and laughing adventure of our own making. We’ll explore how to create a magical world of a self-cleaning toy room and tap dancing penguins. If you “Love to Laugh” and want to spend a week studying the mystery of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” Join us and “Let’s ALL fly a kite!” We’ll share our Mary Poppings on Friday afternoon at 2:30pm for families and friends.

August 3 – 7 | Night at the Zoo | $475
Ever wonder what happens at the Zoo after all visitors leave and the zookeepers lock up for the night? Let’s find out! We’ll create our own theatrical BAL Zoo and become the animals! We’ll create costume pieces and explore what it feels like to be different animals. As we navigate the basics of acting techniques, we’ll devise our own animal celebration through theatrical games, improvised scenes, dancing and singing! We’ll share our discoveries with families and friends on Friday afternoon. Remember, “It’s all happening at the Zoo!”

August 10 – 14: Mini Musical: Cinderella | $475
Join us as we create our own Cinderella musical! Using basic acting techniques for the voice and body, theater games and exercises we’ll establish our ensemble. We’ll explore the music and themes of Cinderella and dive into more recent alternate storylines to this classic fairytale and then collectively devise our own Cinderella musical with singing, dancing, props and set pieces. We’ll share our discoveries and final product for families and friends on Friday afternoon. Come and make the dreams that you dream come true!
