Program Description

The BAL Young Actor’s Conservatory is a program for motivated students who are currently working professionally or who aspire to work professionally. This training program offers an in-depth immersion into the process and technique needed to develop your craft to create your own work and audition successfully. You’ll be able to walk into the audition/rehearsal studio with confidence because you will have real-life experience and a toolbox of techniques. Each student will receive feedback and support to help them strengthen and develop their performance skills. The two core classes within the program are Acting (Mondays) and Musical Theater (Wednesdays). We recommend both classes but you can also choose just one if you prefer. MUSICAL THEATRE TECHNIQUE (Wednesdays) This class will focus on building your Musical Theatre skills. In the Musical Theatre Technique classes, students will receive training in singing and dancing. Vocal Training will focus on developing the voice with care and attention to vocal health. There will be a focus on breath support, resonance, physical relaxation and alignment, and the development of high and low registers. Students will connect to their natural voice and open the way for freedom and expression. Students will also learn to select appropriate material for their voice and range. They will be able to give accompanists the appropriate tempo and cuts on auditions and know how to communicate with the pianist at an audition. Dance training will focus on preparing the body for movement/dance through warm-ups and self-care. Students will connect with their bodies and develop a technique that will allow them to be more physically expressive. Coordination, spatial awareness, rhythm and expression will be taught through an exposure through various theater dance forms. Students will learn how to approach different styles of choreography and make the choreography their own. Acting Technique (Mondays) Acting training will work on age-appropriate scenes and monologues from plays, films, and TV selected for the students. Students will receive training in both theater and film acting. Students will learn to analyze the text and understand the play and the circumstances of the scene. They will ask questions about where they are, who they are talking to, and what the character wants in the scene. They will explore obstacles and tactics. Students will learn and practice how to make bold choices while also learning out to be flexible and take direction. There will be a focus on listening and specificity. Classes will expose students to a variety of acting techniques and styles.
