STORYBOOK THEATRE I

Storybook Theatre I

Children will be invited into the fantastical world of a new picture book each week of this course. We work to ignite the imagination while encouraging social, physical and cognitive development through theater games and improvisation in the realm of each book.

Musical Theatre Intensive: Into The Woods

This season BAL brings you, Into The Woods Jr.! After an incredible experience with the cast and crew of Annie Jr. during the Spring of 2015, we are gearing up for our next mainstage production of Into The Woods starring an ensemble of young actresses and actors (no auditions)! Join us as we collaborate to produce a child-driven show!
Rehearsals will culminate in series of performances at the The Actors Fund, a state-of-the-art black box theatre in Boerum Hill.

Final Performances: February 4, 5, 6, 11 & 12 (times TBA) at The Actors Fund – MAP IT

  • Times: Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 – 6:00 PM
  • Session Dates: Intensive begins Oct. 5 2015 and runs along the DOE calendar through Feb. 2016. We will additionally meet Tuesday, Feb. 2 from 3:30 – 6 PM

Acting Lab

Students will have the opportunity to dig deeply into the language and movement of four scenes (classical, contemporary, physical and experimental) in this course. Students will choose these scenes over the course of the semester. Each scene will be grounded in a study of basic acting techniques relevant to the scene and character creation. This scene study workshop will culminate in a performance of students’ favorite scenes.

Workshop Intensive Series: Cabaret Studio

Cabaret and songwriting team of David Alpher (pianist/composer) and Jennie Litt (singer/lyricist) join the BAL teaching team to lead the Cabaret Studio Intensive! Cabaret Studio will introduce tweens and teens to the art of cabaret performance by providing a laboratory in which they can explore their relationship to a selection of songs, and in so doing, develop a unique, personal “take” on each song. The intensive class will train students in mic technique, as well as in the specific conventions of cabaret performance. Cabaret Studio will culminate in a class show to be presented at a NYC cabaret club Don’t Tell Mama!

Middle School Musicals

Pitch Perfect meets Glee in this class’ musical magic! Through a variety of games, exercises and choreography, students will engage their whole self as actors and actresses in live musical theater performance. Look forward to learning music and text while devising choreography and movement from Broadway’s hits including 13 and Wicked along with popular music. We will jump into a new musical piece each class as inspiration for creating our own numbers and performances.
