BAL offers immersive summer acting programs and theater camps for Early Childhood, Elementary School, Middle School and High School students. Highly creative weekly themes shape the stories we share, the games we play and the art and music that are woven into the flow of the each day. Young PLAYers Series

Summer Theater Program

Program Description

Create theater magic this summer with Brooklyn Acting Lab!

BAL’s Young PLAYers Series run weekly from July 6 – August 14, 2020. Now available at P.S. 321 in North Park Slope, Brooklyn — with a new selection of weekly theater programs for rising Kindergarteners and 1st graders!

These fun and enriching full day programs will encourage young drama explorers to use their bodies, voices and imaginations. Each week is unique with different themes to inspire our explorations. Led by experienced theater-educators who can encourage even the most reticent young actor to join in the magic of theatrical creation. Join us and increase fun! Early drop-off and extended day are available at an additional fee.

Please send your child with a healthy lunch, two snacks, and a bottle of water. We are a nut-free zone so please pack snacks and food accordingly! If your child is participating in our aftercare program, please kindly send your child with one or two extra healthy snacks for the end of their day!

Our “sharing” is scheduled on Fridays at 2:30PM at PS 321. We love when parents and/or caregivers are able to attend the performance, however we do understand that scheduling is sometimes difficult. As long as your child knows in advance, our staff will always be present for your children as their “audience,” and will provide a lot of support!

Early Drop-off is available at 8:30 am on Monday, 8 am Tuesday thru Friday ($50 per week). Aftercare is available from 3–6 pm Monday thru Thursday, but NOT on Friday ($180 per week).

Program Dates and Themes

July 6 – 10 | Unicorns, Wizards, Dragons & Fairies | $475
Come join us as we spend a magical week exploring the worlds of unicorns, wizards, dragons and fairies! We’ll use art materials together with our voices, bodies, and imaginations to create magical, theatrical landscapes, sing songs of adventures and travel on a mystical journey. We’ll share what we’ve discovered with our families and BAL staff at the end of the week.

July 13 – 17 | Mini Musical: A Frozen Adventure | $475
We’ll use the super fun and popular Disney musical Frozen as our jumping off point to travel to the icy northland and devise our own adventure. Incorporating lots of fun theater games and exercises, we’ll explore alternative plots, sing, dance, and create our own text and set pieces as we produce our unique frozen spectacle for families and friends on Friday afternoon.

July 20 – 24 | Clowning Around | $475
Ever really want to just be a clown? Now’s your chance! We’ll each develop a clown persona, learn what skills clowns use to make people laugh, use theater games and exercises to create a clown troupe, develop skits from our own ideas and write some silly clown jokes! Hey, it’s really ok to spend a week being silly! On Friday afternoon, our Clown Troupe will put on a clown-extravaganza for families and friends. Come join the fun!

July 27 – 31 | Mini Musical: Mary Poppins | $475 
If you love Mary Poppins, (and really, who doesn’t!?) join us for an exciting week dancing on the (imaginary) rooftops of Park Slope! We’ll let this enchanting story lead us on a singing, movement and laughing adventure of our own making. We’ll explore how to create a magical world of a self-cleaning toy room and tap dancing penguins. If you “Love to Laugh” and want to spend a week studying the mystery of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” Join us and “Let’s ALL fly a kite!” We’ll share our Mary Poppings on Friday afternoon at 2:30pm for families and friends.

August 3 – 7 | Night at the Zoo | $475
Ever wonder what happens at the Zoo after all visitors leave and the zookeepers lock up for the night? Let’s find out! We’ll create our own theatrical BAL Zoo and become the animals! We’ll create costume pieces and explore what it feels like to be different animals. As we navigate the basics of acting techniques, we’ll devise our own animal celebration through theatrical games, improvised scenes, dancing and singing! We’ll share our discoveries with families and friends on Friday afternoon. Remember, “It’s all happening at the Zoo!”

August 10 – 14: Mini Musical: Cinderella | $475
Join us as we create our own Cinderella musical! Using basic acting techniques for the voice and body, theater games and exercises we’ll establish our ensemble. We’ll explore the music and themes of Cinderella and dive into more recent alternate storylines to this classic fairytale and then collectively devise our own Cinderella musical with singing, dancing, props and set pieces. We’ll share our discoveries and final product for families and friends on Friday afternoon. Come and make the dreams that you dream come true!

Produce a magical, theatrical experience with Brooklyn Acting Lab!

Our one-week summer programs allow your child to work with a team of professional theater-educators to bring a theatrical production from text (“The Page’) to a full performance (‘The Stage’)! Actors will work as an ensemble, using a script as a starting point to develop characters, movement, staging, etc. Together we will produce a magical, theatrical experience. No prior experience is necessary to participate in this supportive and nurturing ensemble experience. We will also incorporate singing, movement and tools from our Actors Toolboxes. Each week culminates in a Friday afternoon sharing open to family and friends. Sign up for one week or for the entire summer!

BAL is an ensemble-based program. We believe that one of the most exciting aspects of theater-making is working together to create a performance piece which is inclusive and celebrates each and every ensemble-member. At our summer theater programs everyone has a part to PLAY whether you are a veteran to the stage or new to the scene.

We’ll use the power of our imaginations to enter Matilda’s world. The songs and music from the Broadway musical Matilda will be our starting point to explore the wonders in our own lives. We’ll sing, move and dance as we define what kid power means to us and think about when we grow up. We’ll use our creative energy to work on set pieces and create a performance sharing for our families and friends on Friday afternoon.

July 13 – 17 | Little Women | $475
Enter the magical world of Ancient Greece where fairies exist to protect humans and mythical royalty, and common tradespeople dress up to perform hysterically funny skits! August 3 – 7 | The Descendants | $475
What happens when the children of Disney’s most evil villains (who have been raised on an isolated island), suddenly come to join a ‘regular’ school? We’ll find out! We’ll use actors’ tools (our voices, our bodies, emotions and imagination!) to investigate and develop our own storyline. We’ll have fun with costumes, props, set pieces and will create our own production, adding music and movement to be shared with our families and friends on Friday afternoon.

August 10 – 14: Mini Musical: Singin’ in the Rain | $475
We’ll travel back in time to Hollywood as silent films were being replaced by talkies! What was it like to act in silent movies? How different did actors have to behave to express emotions? And, what happened when they could talk on camera? And sing?! We’ll romp through some of early Hollywood’s best music as we devise our own mini-musical. What could be more fun than singing (and dancing) in the rain? We’ll share our performance with our families and friends on Friday afternoon.

Program Description

Join us for Summer Intensives with Brooklyn Acting Lab: at The K-293 Campus in Cobble Hill!

BAL’s Summer Intensives are theater workshops designed specifically for rising 4th-8th graders. Programs run from July 6th-August 28th at the K293 Campus in Cobble Hill.

Intensives cover a range of intriguing areas: from a musical theater bootcamp to acting on-camera. Young people will learn how to perform a monologue, sing an audition cut, slate for the camera, and improvise. Sing, dance and act all summer long with our staff of professional actors, directors and choreographers! Summer Intensives are open to every experience level! Whether your child is seriously considering a performing arts school, wants to explore theatrical activities, or is simply looking to have fun and make new friends in the community, these workshops deliver. Sign up for one or more weeks!

Summer 2019 Musical: Production To Be Announced

Has your child wanted to be a part of a musical production? They can join BAL this summer to be a cast member in our Summer Musical Ensemble. No prior acting or musical experience is needed. The ensemble meets Mondays-Fridays from 9AM-3PM in Park Slope.

In just four weeks, we will create, rehearse, tech, and perform a full-length musical, with plenty of time for vocal coaching, dance technique, and tons of other performance-based workshops. For our actors who want to perform in a musical show this summer, and are ready to take on an entire production, this is an unforgettable summer experience and an opportunity to make new friends!

Dates: July 6–July 31
Ages: Open to rising 4th-9th graders
Hours: 9 AM–3 PM
Location: Qi Tao (8 Windsor Place, Park Slope)

Early Drop-off is available at 8:30 am on Monday, 8 am Tuesday thru Friday ($50/per week). Aftercare is available from 3–6 pm Monday thru Thursday, but NOT on Friday ($180 per week).

Performance Details
Performance: Our performance will take place at the Mark O’Donnell Theater (an 80-seat blackbox in downtown Brooklyn) at Actors Fund Arts Center. Performance and Tech Rehearsal dates TK.
