Workshop Description

Are you quick with a quip? Are you a good listener? Do you wish you were better? Do you love to make people laugh or just want to know what it takes to mine and develop those funny or intriguing ideas you have? Have you ever watched Whose Line Is It Anyway? and thought “I wanna try that someday.” Well, now is your chance. Brooklyn Acting Lab Improv is the perfect class for everyone from the aspiring professional actor who wants to learn how to “be in the moment”  to someone who just wants to be more comfortable and engaging in their work presentations. In Brooklyn Acting Lab Improv you will learn how to:

  • Never deny
  • Always add on
  • Mine a premise
  • Develop your confidence and stage presence
  • Increase your listening skills
  • Develop your ideas
  • Observe and analyze behavior
  • Overcome stage fright
  • Develop a group mind and understanding
  • Create and develop Characters
  • Emerge into a scene without being Funny
  • Make people laugh without pushing

Participants will also learn about the improv scene in NYC and nationwide and have the opportunity to meet with special guest artists.  Students will get an invite to the different styles of improv and where to catch the best of the best in and around the city. This is a “learn by doing” class. Everyone will participate in many exercises every class. Weekly Themes

  • Weeks 1 & 2: The basics of Improv: What is a Harold?: Never Deny; Always Add On, and preparing an idea for the stage.
  • Weeks 3 & 4: Honing in on listening, developing stage presence, act outs, performing and being part of an ensemble, and handling stage fright.
  • Week 5:  Time to hit the stage!
About Tim Dougherty

Tim Dougherty (Instructor) Tim is so happy to be starting his 3rd year with BAL teaching and performing. Tim is from Los Angeles and has been been a professional actor since a young age. His earlier TV and Movie Credits credits include: Santa Claus 3, Co star on Wizards of Waverly Place, Drake and Josh, Blue collar TV, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Tims more recent Credits include: A Guest Star Appearance on NBC’s NCIS New Orleans, and a Co Star role on Amazon Prime Pilot- Half Empty, Written by Cazzie David ( daughter of Larry David), Along with 3 appearances on Saturday Night Live 2018-2019, The Late Night with Seth Myers show, and His role playing Truman Capote in the Danny Strong film Rebel in the Rye. Tim began acting because of his love of improv. His teacher Martha Melinda who studied under the legend Viola Spolin opened up the door which he will NEVER shut. While training Tim found the beauty, joy, and importance of improvising. He has studied with The Groundlings, UCB, and Improvolution here in NYC. You can catch him improvise is specific shows here in NYC at Improvolution in the west village. Tim Dougherty received a BFA in Acting from Pace University and is Represented by Stewart Talent.
